Recently, in these pages, the author introduced a new iteration of only a slightly less new metric called Style Points, itself designed to estimate roughly, on a scale of 0 to 10, the aesthetic appeal of each club currently playing in Europe’s five major leagues and also the MLS. What follows is a table featuring not Style Point club scores, but rather match scores, for the weekend’s European matches.
Match scores are produced merely by averaging the Style Point figures for each club — a methodology which, for what it lacks in sophistication, makes up for in being easy to produce.
Here are the top-10 matches in Europe this week by this clearly flawed metric:
- Lyon are the French club which competed admirably with and scored a late equalizer at PSG this past weekend. They’re currently second among Ligue 1 clubs in dribbles per match, led by striker Alexandre Lacazette‘s mark of 3.3. They play Lorient at 13:00 ET on Wednesday.
- Tied among this week’s most probably stylish matches is Malaga–Barcelona. The latter club’s virtues are manifest. As for the former, they’ve produced above-average numbers of shots in the box and dribble per match despite having a fraction of the larger clubs’ resources. Most notable among Malaga’s squad is Luis Alberto (2.3 S/G, 2.0 DRIB/G). The match is Wednesday at 16:00 ET.
